GoHighLevel Twilio vs LeadConnector Phone: Which Should You Use?

GoHighLevel can run calls and texts through its own LeadConnector phone system or through your own Twilio account. Here’s how they differ, and what to check before you switch.

GoHighLevel Twilio vs LeadConnector phone — which should you use?

When people compare GoHighLevel Twilio vs LeadConnector, they’re asking how calls and text messages should run inside their account. GoHighLevel can use its own built-in phone system — the LeadConnector Phone System, usually called LC Phone — or connect to a Twilio account that you own and manage yourself.

Both send texts and make calls. The differences are in who manages the account, how billing and rebilling work, where messaging registration happens and how much admin you take on. This guide explains each option in plain English, based on HighLevel’s own documentation, and what to check before switching.

What LC Phone and Twilio are

  • LC Phone (LeadConnector Phone System) — HighLevel’s built-in phone system. You buy numbers, send SMS and make calls inside GoHighLevel without integrating a separate provider. HighLevel says it is available to all agencies without an approval step.
  • Twilio (bring your own account) — you create and manage your own Twilio account and connect it to GoHighLevel. Numbers, usage and billing sit in your Twilio account.

New sub-accounts can be linked to LC Phone by default once the agency switches, and an individual sub-account can still use its own Twilio account if needed.

GoHighLevel Twilio vs LeadConnector: key differences

Setup and management

LC Phone is managed from inside GoHighLevel, so there’s one less system to log into and maintain. With Twilio, you manage a second account: its settings, balance, security and any issues that arise there.

Billing and rebilling

With LC Phone, usage is billed through your HighLevel account, and HighLevel lists real-time billing as a benefit. HighLevel says pricing follows Twilio’s underlying rates, with actual charges varying by country, service and carrier fees. Agencies can export usage from the agency billing settings, and SaaS rebilling continues to work. With your own Twilio account, you pay Twilio directly and handle any rebilling to clients yourself.

Messaging registration (A2P 10DLC)

If you text US numbers, your brand and campaign must be registered. On LC Phone this happens through HighLevel’s Trust Center. Importantly, HighLevel notes that A2P registration from your own Twilio account does not carry over when you move to LC Phone — it must be completed again, and registration fees apply again. Our A2P 10DLC registration checklist walks through what you need.

Support

On LC Phone, phone and messaging issues go through HighLevel support. With your own Twilio account, some issues need to be raised with Twilio — for example, an account suspension must be resolved with Twilio before the account can be migrated.

What happens when you switch from Twilio to LC Phone

According to HighLevel’s migration guide:

  • Agency first, then sub-accounts. Switching the agency makes LC Phone the default for new sub-accounts. Existing sub-accounts must be linked individually or in bulk — the bulk option covers US and Canada sub-accounts only.
  • Numbers and history move. HighLevel states that phone numbers, call logs, SMS and MMS move to the new system.
  • Service stays active during migration, which HighLevel says can take up to 48 hours.
  • Call recordings and old voicemails don’t transfer. They stay in the Twilio account, so download anything you need before closing it.
  • Registrations don’t transfer. A2P brand and campaign, business profile and similar trust records must be completed again.
  • Avoid buying or deleting numbers while migration is running.
  • Reinstall the mobile app afterwards to avoid problems with inbound calls.
  • Some international numbers may need approved regulatory details.

A pre-switch checklist

  1. List every sub-account, its numbers and the country they’re in.
  2. Download call recordings and voicemails you need to keep from Twilio.
  3. Gather business details for A2P re-registration.
  4. Make sure the Twilio account is in good standing.
  5. Pause buying or releasing numbers during migration.
  6. Tell your team to reinstall the mobile app afterwards.
  7. Test inbound and outbound calls and texts on each sub-account once migration completes.

After the switch: test everything

Phone settings affect many automations. After any change, test missed-call text-back, appointment reminders, lead follow-up texts and call routing for each sub-account. If your team uses the GoHighLevel power dialer, make a few test calls from the queue too.

Common mistakes

  • Switching without planning A2P re-registration, so texting is interrupted.
  • Closing the Twilio account before downloading recordings.
  • Assuming existing sub-accounts move automatically when the agency switches.
  • Not testing automations that depend on calls and texts.
  • Mixing providers across sub-accounts without documenting which uses what.
