Shopify apps every Indian store needs, and the ones to skip

Choosing Shopify apps for Indian stores is where many new brands go wrong. The Shopify App Store has thousands of options, each promising more sales. It’s easy to install fifteen of them in the first month — and end up with a slow store, overlapping features and a monthly bill that quietly grows in dollars.

When we build or clean up Indian Shopify stores, we start from a simple rule: every app has to earn its place. This guide walks through the categories most Indian stores genuinely need, what to look for in each, and the kinds of apps you can usually skip.

Check your theme and Shopify first

Before installing anything, check what your theme and Shopify already do. Modern themes often include announcement bars, product badges, size charts, related products, FAQs and trust icons. Shopify itself handles discounts, gift cards, basic SEO fields and abandoned-checkout emails. Every app you don’t need is one less thing to slow your store down.

The Shopify apps most Indian stores need

1. A payment gateway built for India

Shopify Payments isn’t available in India, so you’ll connect a local gateway such as Razorpay, PayU or Cashfree. Look for UPI, cards, net banking and wallets, a smooth mobile checkout, and clear settlement timelines. Remember that Shopify adds its own transaction fee on top when you use a third-party gateway — our guide to Shopify store costs in India shows how that affects which plan to pick.

2. Shipping and courier management

Unless you ship very few orders, you’ll want an app that connects your store to courier partners, compares rates, prints labels and pushes tracking updates to customers automatically. Look for serviceable PIN code checks and support for both prepaid and cash-on-delivery orders.

3. COD verification and RTO reduction

Cash on delivery is still popular in India, but unconfirmed COD orders lead to returns to origin (RTO) — you pay shipping both ways and get nothing. Apps in this category confirm COD orders by WhatsApp or SMS before dispatch, flag risky orders, or nudge customers towards prepaid payment with a small incentive. For many Indian stores, this category pays for itself fastest.

4. WhatsApp for support and order updates

Indian shoppers expect to reach you on WhatsApp. At minimum, add a chat button. Better still, use a WhatsApp app that sends order confirmations, shipping updates and abandoned-cart reminders through the official WhatsApp Business Platform, with customer opt-in. If you want WhatsApp connected to a proper CRM with follow-up automation, that’s part of our GoHighLevel service.

5. Product reviews

Reviews build trust on product pages and add fresh, original content that helps SEO. Choose an app that sends automatic review requests after delivery, supports photo reviews and loads quickly. Only show genuine customer reviews — never invented ones.

6. Email and marketing automation

You need a way to send welcome emails, abandoned-cart reminders and occasional campaigns. Shopify’s own Shopify Messaging app covers email campaigns for many stores. Dedicated marketing platforms make sense once your list and automations grow.

7. Analytics you’ll actually check

Shopify’s built-in reports cover most small stores. Make sure Google Analytics and your ad platforms are connected properly through their official channels, so you know which campaigns bring sales. One reliable setup beats five tracking apps that disagree with each other.

Useful once you’re growing

  • Better search and filters, once you have enough products that shoppers struggle to find things.
  • Subscriptions, if you sell consumables that customers reorder.
  • Loyalty and referrals, once you have repeat customers worth rewarding.
  • Inventory and accounting integrations, when you sell on several channels or need GST-ready accounting.
  • Workflow automation, to tag orders, alert your team or hide out-of-stock products automatically.

Apps most stores can skip

  • Features your theme already has — announcement bars, badges, size charts and FAQ accordions.
  • Multiple pop-up apps. One well-timed pop-up is enough; three will annoy visitors and slow pages.
  • Fake urgency tools such as made-up “X people are viewing this” counters or countdowns that reset. They damage trust and can mislead customers.
  • “Speed booster” apps that promise instant results. Real speed comes from fewer apps, lighter themes and smaller images.
  • Overlapping apps — two review apps, two email tools or several analytics apps doing the same job.
  • Apps you installed to test and forgot about. Many keep charging and loading code.

How to judge any Shopify app before installing

  1. Does it solve a real problem you have today? Not one you might have next year.
  2. Can your theme or Shopify already do it?
  3. What does it cost in rupees? Many apps are billed in US dollars, so check the monthly amount after conversion.
  4. How recent are the reviews, and does the developer reply to problems?
  5. What permissions does it ask for? Only grant access to data it clearly needs.
  6. Does it add code to every page? Test your store speed before and after installing.
  7. How easy is it to remove? Some apps leave code behind after uninstalling.

Run an app audit every few months

List every installed app with its monthly cost and what it does. Remove anything you don’t use, check your theme for code left by old apps, and test your store speed afterwards. It often cuts costs and makes the store noticeably faster on mobile.

Apps and SEO

Too many apps can hurt SEO indirectly by slowing your store. Most SEO basics — titles, descriptions, sitemaps and redirects — are built into Shopify, so you may not need an SEO app at all. Our Shopify SEO checklist covers what to set up without extra apps.
