For an Indian D2C brand, the real difference between Shopify and WooCommerce is not the plan price — it’s what you pay on every order as you grow. Here’s the full picture.

Shopify vs WooCommerce for Indian D2C brands — full cost comparison

Short answer: for an Indian D2C brand, Shopify vs WooCommerce comes down to one trade-off. Shopify costs more per order — because Shopify Payments isn’t available in India, Shopify adds its own transaction fee on top of your gateway’s charges — but it saves you hosting, security and maintenance work. WooCommerce has no platform fee per order, but you pay for hosting, premium plugins and someone to look after the site. At low sales, the difference is small; as monthly sales grow, Shopify’s per-order fee becomes the biggest line in the comparison.

Our general Shopify vs WooCommerce guide compares features. This post is only about cost for D2C brands selling in India, with worked examples you can adapt to your own numbers.

Bar chart of monthly platform fees: Shopify third-party fee of ₹4,000 at ₹2 lakh sales, ₹20,000 at ₹10 lakh and ₹50,000 at ₹50 lakh, versus ₹0 for WooCommerce
Shopify’s per-order fee grows with sales; WooCommerce has none but adds hosting and maintenance costs.

The cost lines that matter for D2C in India

  • Platform subscription — Shopify’s monthly plan; WooCommerce itself is free.
  • Platform transaction fee — Shopify only, when you don’t use Shopify Payments.
  • Payment gateway charges — Razorpay, PayU, Cashfree and others. You pay these on both platforms.
  • Hosting and security — included in Shopify; a separate bill for WooCommerce.
  • Theme and apps/plugins — both platforms have free and paid options.
  • Shipping, COD and RTO tools — usually third-party, on both platforms.
  • Maintenance — updates, backups and fixes. Small on Shopify; ongoing on WooCommerce.
  • GST — Indian businesses pay GST on Shopify’s bills; GST also applies to hosting and most paid services.

Shopify costs for an Indian D2C brand

Shopify’s pricing overview explains that stores using an external payment provider — because Shopify Payments isn’t offered in their country, or by choice — pay a third-party transaction fee that depends on the plan. India is not on Shopify’s list of Shopify Payments countries, so Indian stores pay this fee on top of their gateway’s charges.

  • Basic: 2% of each sale.
  • Grow: 1% of each sale.
  • Advanced: 0.6% of each sale.

WooCommerce costs for an Indian D2C brand

  • WooCommerce plugin: free.
  • Hosting: the biggest variable. WooCommerce’s own server recommendations list the PHP, database and memory a store needs; cheap shared hosting often struggles during sales.
  • Domain and SSL: domain yearly; SSL is often included by hosts.
  • Premium plugins: common ones cover shipping, subscriptions, product filters, backups and security.
  • Maintenance: WordPress, WooCommerce and plugin updates, testing, backups and security monitoring.
  • Gateway charges: the same gateways as Shopify, with no extra platform fee.

Worked examples: when does the difference matter?

These examples look only at the platform transaction fee, because it scales with sales and is the clearest difference. Add your own quotes for hosting, apps and maintenance.

Brand A: ₹2 lakh a month in online sales

On Shopify Basic, the 2% fee is ₹4,000 a month. On WooCommerce, the platform fee is ₹0 — but you pay for hosting and upkeep. At this level, the two are often close, and Shopify’s lower maintenance can make it the easier choice for a small team.

Brand B: ₹10 lakh a month

On Basic, 2% is ₹20,000 a month; on Grow, 1% is ₹10,000 plus the higher plan price. WooCommerce has no platform fee, so the gap now pays for good hosting and regular maintenance with money to spare. This is the stage where many brands compare carefully.

Brand C: ₹50 lakh a month

On Grow, 1% is ₹50,000 a month; on Advanced, 0.6% is ₹30,000 plus a much higher plan price. WooCommerce on strong, managed hosting usually costs far less at this scale — but you need a reliable technical team to keep the store fast and safe during big sales.

Costs that don’t show up on pricing pages

  • RTO losses — returned COD orders cost shipping both ways on either platform. Our Shopify COD and RTO guide shows how to reduce them.
  • Downtime during sales — a slow or crashed WooCommerce store during a launch costs more than a year of good hosting.
  • App sprawl — many small monthly apps add up on Shopify.
  • Plugin conflicts — WooCommerce updates can break features if not tested.
  • Your team’s time — who handles updates, fixes and security?

Which should your D2C brand choose?

  • Choose Shopify if you’re starting out or selling a few lakh a month, want to launch fast, and don’t have a technical team. Plan to review your plan as sales grow.
  • Choose WooCommerce if your monthly sales are high or growing fast, you want no per-order platform fee, you need deep customisation or content-heavy pages, and you have reliable technical support.
  • Already on Shopify and growing? Compare the next plan up first — a higher plan’s lower fee can be cheaper than switching platforms.

Frequently asked questions

At low monthly sales, costs are often similar. As sales grow, WooCommerce usually becomes cheaper because it has no per-order platform fee, while Shopify charges a third-party transaction fee in India. WooCommerce needs more spending on hosting and maintenance.
